Why the side of the plane matters
Everything worth seeing from a plane window - a sunrise, the Alps, a city at night - sits on one side of the aircraft or the other, often for hours at a time. Which side is a matter of geometry, not luck: compare the compass bearing of the sight against the plane's heading and you know which window it falls in. That's exactly what this site computes, for the sun's actual position on your date and departure time and for ~15,000 catalogued mountains, coastlines, lakes, landmarks and cities along your route.
What the verdict tells you
You get a left-or-right pick with a confidence level, broken down by takeoff, cruise and landing - because on longer flights the best window genuinely changes en route. The verdict accounts for day and night (city lights stay visible after dark; mountains don't), sunrise and sunset crossings mid-flight, and which side will take glare. Curious about the method?
